PPI in Medical Practice

On December 5th 2024, the monthly CME there was a talk on PPI in Medical Practice by Dr. Supriya P S, Associate professor, Dept of Medicine, Fr. Muller Medical College. Dr. Ganaraj Kulamarva, Consultant Gastroenterologist KSHEMA chairs the session. This was followed by an interactive question and answer session after the CME.


“World Aids Day” - “Updated on HIV Treatment ID Doc Perspectives”

On December 19th 2024 initially in view of “World Aids Day” celebrated month of December there was an interesting talk on “Updated on HIV Treatment ID Doc Perspectives” by Dr. V K Vineeth who is the infectious disease specialist from YMCH hospital Mangalore. This was followed by interactive question and answer session.

What’s next for your Child’s Career? Free Career Guidance Session for the parents of 9, 10, 1st P.U. & 2nd P.U.
Parents Career Guidance Session

Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch in collaboration with Draw my Career organised a free career guidance session for parents of students in grades 9, 10 and 1st and 2nd PU. This was conducted in IMA hall, on December 14th 2024, in IMA House, Attavar road, Mangalore. With the tagline “What’s next for your Child’s Career”, the session emphasized the importance of making well informed career decisions, selecting the right course at the right college, and transforming a child’s passion into a fulfilling career. The session attracted nearly 100 participants including students from various schools and colleges.


World HIV Day

On December 15th 2024, Indian Medical Association on the occasion of World HIV Day we had a half day program and interaction with HIV positive children at Sneha Sadan Gurupura. Sneha Sadan is a comprehensive care and support center for HIV positive children. The IMA Mangaluru Branch office bearers Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza and Dr. Archana Bhat & Dr. Madhusudhan along with IMA members had had an interactive program at Gurupura Sneha Sadan. The children around 25 in number who were all HIV positive children they enjoyed the program there was a dance program for the children as well as a skit Yamadarmaraya skit and the children fully enjoyed with interactive session. And the program was followed by free lunch for all the inmates of Sneha Sadan.


HIV Day Celebration

In view of HIV Day Celebration we visited “SNEHA DEEP” HIV Centre for girls and donated Groceries for their day to day use for month costing around 1 lakh.

“Being an Iron Man”

On here was a talk by Dr. Guruprasad Bhat, “Being an Iron Man”, consultant oncologist Kanachur Institute of Medical sciences Mangalore. He explained about the requirements to be an iron man and the Physical activities and the physical fitness required the trainee.


Geriatric Medicine 2025

Dr. Prabha Adhikari was an Editorial Board Member and contributed a chapter towards Geriatric Medicine 2025.


ENTERTAINMENT
“International Men’s Day”

On 5th December 2024 Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch celebrated the “International Men’s Day” at the IMA Mangaluru branch for the 1st time. There was a talent show by the men followed by felicitation of all the male members who attended the meeting that day.


Christmas and New Year Celebration

On December 19th 2024 we celebrated Christmas and New Year Celebration at IMA Hall Following this there was Christmas Day Celebration along with Santa Claus and a housie housie game followed by distribution of Christmas sweets and kuswar to all the members who participated and who attended the program by IMA office members.


BRANCH MEMBERS ACHIEVEMENT & FELICITATION

On December 19th 2024, Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch felicitated the winners of the Cricket Tournament which was held in the month of November 2024. The Runner-Up Trophy in the State Level Cricket Tournament won by Mangalore Legends team.


Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch felicitated the Mangalore Coastal Tigers also won the Runner-Up Trophy in the State Level Cricket Tournament


For the 1st time in the history of the State Cricket Tournament There was a Women’s Cricket which was introduced Kudla considers the Mangalore women’s team won the semifinal position in the State women’s cricket Tournament


Dr. Sowrabha Bhat, Associate professor, Dept of Endocrinology, YMC has been honored with the Prestigious National Young Academic Excellence Award by IMA National Board for the year 2024 – 25.


PUBLIC AWARENESS ACTION

Dr. Prabha Adhikari gave a talk on “Septic Coagulopathy“at the 37th Annual Conference of Geriatric Society Of India held at Kochi on 14th of December.
Dr. Prabha has also contributed to chapters in the book “ESSENTIAL OF GERIATRICS”.


Dr. Prabha Adhikari inaugurated “Samyak” a premier assisted living facility near Ambikanagar Mangalore. The first of its kind in Mangalore.


Dr. Ancilla Patrao, Administration Medical Officer, PHC, Kemral was the Chief Guest for the Annual Day Celebration of Pompei Pre University College, Talipady, Aikala.


Dr. Shwetha Kamath received Driving Change award at MOM Summit & Awards held in Mumbai organised by Moms league Global Avantika.

On 1st November 2024 for the first time in the history of Indian Medical Association Mangaluru conducted Karnataka Rajyotsava Day. The Flag hosting of Karnataka was done by Dr. Shantharam Shetty, Pro Chancellor, Nitte University, Mangalore. Dr. Vasanth Kumar Perla, Former Director and Kannada Article Writer released the book authored by Dr. Shantharam Shetty. Nadoja Dr. G Shanker, honored Dr. Annayya Kulal with the first ever IMA Mangaluru Karnatak Rajyotsava Award created by office bearers of IMA Mangaluru 2023-24 for the first time in Karnataka recognizing Doctor’s Contribution to Kannada Language and Karnataka. This Award will be given to a Doctor in Karnataka recognizing their contribution to Kannada Literature and Karnataka. Dr. Satheesh Bhandary , Former Vice Chancellor, Nitte University gave a inaugural speech of IMA Karnataka Rajyotsava function. The Chief Guest of the function Sri. Suman Talwar, cine Actor participated in the function and gave speech on Doctors Contribution regarding Health Care to the Society and pointed out the Doctors sacrifice during Covid -19 pandemic. The Guests of Honor Mr. M P Shrinath. President, Kannada Sahithya Parishath, D K and Mr. Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Former President, Kannada Sahithya Parishath, D K actively participated in the IMA Mangaluru Karnataka Rajyotsava Prashasthi. The CME program in Kannada by IMA Mangaluru Rajyotsava Awardee Dr. Annayya Kulal, Topic: Vaidyo Narayana Hari- Idella yestu Sari and CME program in English was conducted by IMA Mangaluru Treasurer , Dr. Prashantha B, Topic: Anemia in Elderly. The President’s speech was done by Dr. Ranjan R K. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary IMA Mangaluru Branch welcomed the Guests and gathering on and off the dias and proposed vote of thanks.


On the same day as a Rajyotsava special IMA Mangaluru Postal Stamp was released by Mr. Suman Talwar, Cine Actor and Dr. Shantharam Shetty, Pro Chancellor, Nitte University.


On 3rd November 2024 Mangalore Endocrinology and Diabetes Society in association with IMA Mangaluru Branch organised “Walkathon – Walk for Wellbeing to commemorate World Diabetes Day”. The Walkathon started from IMA House at 6.30 am and ended up at 8.30 am at IMA House, Mangaluru. Around 150 members participated in the Walkathon.


On 3rd November 2024, Free Health Check Up Camp was organised by MEDS in association with Indian Medical Association . Medical check up camp was conducted for Police Personnel, Tulu cine Actors and technicians and Press club Mangalore. The inauguration of the camp was conducted by Mr. Siddarth Goel, DCP Law & Order from Mr. Umesh DCP, CAR, Mr. M. A Upase, ACP, CAR, Mangalore Dakshina Kannada press club president, Mr. Srinivas Nayak and Tulu Cine Actor and Director, Vijay Kumar Kodialbail, Mangaluru. The Doctors participated in Free Health Check up camp are as follows: Dr. Sudeep K, President, MEDS, Dr. Shrikrishna Acharya, Secretary MEDS, Dr. Ganesh H K, Dr. Sowrabha Bhat, Dr. Akila Bhandarkar, Dr. Shrinath Shetty, Dr. Annayya Kulal and Dr. Avin B R Alva escorted the Guests on the dias. Dr. Avin B R Alva, welcomed the Guests on dias and proposed the vote thanks. The camp lasted from 9.00am to 12.45pm at IMA House, Mangaluru.


On 3rd November 2024 Athletics for Doctors was conducted at Amrutha Vidyalayam, Boloor, Mangalore from 9.00am to 11.00am. The Athletic events conducted were 100mtr Running Race, 100mtr Walking Race, Shotput and Discuss Throw.


On 3rd November 2024 for the first time ever in the history of IMA Mangaluru Branch, Women’s Cricket Tournament was conducted at Amrutha Vidyalayam, Boloor, Mangalore from 11.00am onwards.


On 3rd November 2024, MEDS in association with Indian Medical Association Mangaluru conducted a CME Program on Diagnostic and Therapeutic procedures of Diabetes mellitus at Hotel Ocean Pearl Mangalore at 7.00pm. The CME was given by Dr. Sudeep K, President MEDS, Dr. Ganesh H K, Dr. Sowrabha Bhat, Dr. Akila Bhandarkar. The program sponsored by USV Pvt .Ltd, Mumbai. Dr. Avin B R Alva welcomed the gathering and Dr. Jessy Maria D Souza, Proposed vote thanks


The Installation ceremony for the office bearers of IMA Mangaluru Branch took place on November 7th 2024, at 8 pm in the IMA hall. Dr. M Shantharam Shetty, Pro Chancellor of Nitte University graced the occasion as the installation officer. He administered the oath to the incoming office bearers. The outgoing office bearers were felicitated, and the yearly report from the previous year was presented by the outgoing team. Rt. Rev Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangaluru, Brahmakumari Vishweshwari, Centre Incharge of Brahmakumaris, Mangaluru, Rev. Mohammed Farhan Nadwi Moulana, director of Assuffa Academy, HOD of AI Noor Arabic School, Mangaluru were the Chief Guests of the Programme.
The Programme started with IMA Prayer by Dr. Madhusudhan E Incoming Treasurer. Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza, the incoming President, delivered the acceptance speech, elaborating on the programs planned for the year 2024-25. Dr. Archana Bhat, the incoming Secretary, expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks.
The women wing (WDW, Mangalore) installation ceremony was held on the same day. Dr. Meera A Rao took over as president for the year 2024-25.


On the occasion of World Diabetes day IMA Mangalore organised a talk CME on “Diet, Insulin and Diabetes Mellitus by Dr. Sowrabha Bhat, Associate Professor, Endocrinology, YMCH, Mangalore. The session was chaired by Dr. Shrikrishna V Acharya, Consultant Endocrinologist, KSHEMA, Mangalore. It was a very interactive session and the participants involved in the session and the question and answers were answered by Dr. Sowrabha Bhat. Following this session there was Childrens Day programme it was a fancy dress competition on the occasion of childrens day. In this competition there was around 10 participants from 3 age groups - 6-8years, 8-10 years and less than 6 years. All the childrens participated in this event with enthusiasm. The event was well appreciated by all the Doctors. Prize distribution for fancy dress competition was given by Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza, President IMA Mangaluru Branch. Vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Archana Bhat, Secretary IMA Mangaluru.


On 15th November 2024 IMA Mangaluru Branch and IMA WDW Mangaluru members celebrated Children’s Day at CHETANA – Child Development Centre by distributing fruits and Drawing books to 106 Special needs Childrens.


The first Executive committee meeting was held at IMA Office, 1st floor, Mangalore on 18.11.2024. Meeting was called to order by President Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza after the quorum was established. About 22 members attended the meeting. Discussion on various matters done and decisions taken.


One day workshop for District Surveillance officers and Microbiologist of Karnataka was organised at IMA Hall Hampankatta Mangalore on 21st November 2024 in collaburation with Disrict Public Health liabulatory Dakshina Kannada. Various officers presidede over the function the District Surveillance officer of Dakhina Kannada Introducted the programme. Dr. M Chakrapani, Dr Balamurugan, Mrs. Meena Vijayaraj and Microbiologist attended the programme and spoke on the important of Leptospirosis in the Society. Prevention and early detection of Leptospirosis is very important as there is increasing number of cases of Leptospirosis in our community. Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza, President IMA Mangaluru Branch presided over the programme.


The IDL is the biggest sports carnival in the history of cricketing events in the state, among Doctors. This event united all the cricket enthusiasts together from Nov 22-24.

IMA Mangaluru being the visionary introduced Women’s league for the very first time. The 6 teams – Kudla crusaders, Udupi strikers, Mysuru Queens, Manini Mandya, Davangere dazzlers and Hassan hawks played 3 league matches each and 2 knockout matches at the KMC Marena, Attavar for 2 days and eventually Hassan hawks beat Mysuru Queens in a thrilling final under lights at AJ grounds to be crowned the champions of the inaugral Women’s IDL.
The Jersey released on 21st Nov 2024 The legends leg of the tournament was hosted in the two iconic grounds of Manipal, the end point and MIT grounds across 2 days where six star studded teams – Udupi legends, Kudla legends, Hassan legends, Davangere stars, Yelahanka legends and Mandya Legends battled it out against each other in a league cum knockout format. They showed immense character and resilience along with the fun they had and Hassan legends were the champions of the IDL Legends after beating Kudla legends.
The IDL champion’s league which had 32 teams was spread across 9 beautiful grounds of Mangaluru. The teams were divided into 8 groups across the 9 grounds where each team played 3 league matches and the top 2 teams from each group were qualified to the knockouts.
Group Mangalapuram consisting of Hassan Hoysalas, Mandya rebels, Shivamogga strikers and Anjanadri warriors played at university ground, Konaje.
Group Mandegura consisting of Mysuru royals, Hassan challengers, Yelahanka Yorkers and Bengaluru kannadigas played at the Rajivgandhi stadium, Hejamadi.
Group Maikala consisting of Bengaluru bulls, Mysuru Spartans, chalukya warriors and kudlada pilis played at sea ground, Ullal and Nehru maidan, Hampankatta.
Group Manjarun consisting of Nandi warriors, Davangere dons, coorg avengers and Mysuru mavericks played at Vijaya College, Mulki.
Group Mangaluru consisting of Yelahanka yodhas, raichur risers, RBT rafaels and coastal super kings played at NMPT ground, Panambur.
Group Kudla consisting of costal tigers, AIMS Mandya, Gadag invincible and Shimoga Vikings played at AJ grounds, Kuntikana.
Group Kodial consisting of Tumakuru titans, Bengaluru originals, Chikkamagaluru caffeinates and Mangalore superstars played at father Muller homeopathy ground, Deralakatte.
Group Kaudal consisting of Mandya rebels, Bellary steelers, Tungabhadra thunderbolts and Ranebennur warriors played at paduva grounds.
The round of 16 took place at 6 grounds excluding sea ground, Nehru maidan and Deralakatte with teams facing each other baaed on the ranking system from their qualification from the group stages.
The quarter finals under lights at the stunning AJ grounds gave us thrilling encounters with the top 8 teams – Mysuru royals, Mandya rebels, Bengaluru originals, coastal tigers, Nandi warriors, Yelahanka yodhas, Hassan challengers and Bengaluru bulls going against each other.
And then there were four on the final day at the AJ grounds, the royals, the tigers, the challengers and the rebels. With the Mandya rebels and Hassan challengers losing the semi-finals they had to settle with third and fourth place respectively. The Mysuru royals were crowned the champions of the IDL 2024 after beating the hosts coastal tigers in an exciting final.


Dr. AVIN ALVA, Secretary of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Mangaluru for the term 2023-24, has been honored with the prestigious INDIA'S BEST SECRETARY AWARD for the year 2023-24 by the IMA Headquarters Delhi.

The Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch, in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association Charitable Trust, celebrated "Doctor's Day" with Dr. M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University) and Chairman of Tejasvini Hospital & SSIOT, Mangalore, as the Chief Guest. During this event, four doctors were honored for their significant contributions to the medical field. The celebration and award ceremony took place at Dr. A V Rao Conference Hall, Attavar Road, Mangalore. The doctors felicitated were:

Addressing the members of the Mangalore branch of the Indian Medical Association, Dr. M Shantharam Shetty emphasized that National Doctor’s Day is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the health sector and to encourage young people to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Ranjan R. K., President of IMA Mangaluru Branch, welcomed the Chief Guest and the gathering. Dr. Avin B. R. Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangaluru Branch, spoke about the late Dr. B. C. Roy, noting that July 1st, Doctor’s Day, commemorates the birth and death anniversary of Dr. Roy, who was a physician, freedom fighter, educationist, statesman, social worker, and well-known politician, serving as the Chief Minister of West Bengal for 14 years. In his memory, the Government of India declared July 1st as National Doctor’s Day, a day to honor doctors who have excelled in their fields.

Dr. Shetty, the Chief Guest, also spoke about the government’s recent legislation against medical professionals, urging the fraternity to oppose it. Following the speeches, the program honored the singers of the Blind Artists Association, whose performances were deeply moving. This initiative by IMA Mangaluru aimed to recognize and appreciate the talents of specially-abled individuals, demonstrating that their abilities are indeed special.

Presiding over the program, Dr. Avin B. R. Alva, IMA Secretary, remembered the esteemed members of the medical fraternity who had passed away, including Dr. B. Jagannath Kamath, Dr. K. R. Shetty, Dr. A. Arun Rao, Dr. K. Raghuveer Adiga, Dr. U. V. Shenoy, Dr. Vidyadhar Shetty, and Dr. Pushpalatha Pai, acknowledging their rich legacy. In their honor, a minute of silence was observed. Dr. Alva also highlighted the future plans and activities of the IMA Mangaluru Branch, followed by a vote of thanks.

The IMA Charitable Trust President, Dr. Divakar Rao A., IMA Charitable Trust Treasurer, Dr. K. R. Kamath, IMA President Elect, Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza, and IMA Treasurer, Dr. Prashantha B were also present on the dais. As part of the CME program on Doctor’s Day Celebration, Dr. Deepak Rai, an eminent consultant orthopedic surgeon at Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail Mangalore, delivered a talk on "Robotic Surgery in Joint Replacement," complete with an audio-visual presentation. Dr. Rai shared his expertise on the subject, discussing the adoption of cutting-edge technology and precision surgeries that set new standards in the field. His innovative approach and dedication to excellence have earned him recognition and respect among peers and patients.

On the same day, chess and carrom competition were held for IMA members. Dr. Janardhan Aithala won first place in chess, and Dr. Madhusudhan E. was the runner-up. In the carrom competition, Dr. Vishal Padil won the winner's trophy, and Dr. Preetham was the runner-up. Among IMA WDW members, Dr. Meera Rao received the winner's trophy, and Dr. Shwetha Kamath was the runner-up.

Cultural programmes were performed by the dedicated members of the IMA Mangaluru Women’s Doctors Wing who graciously participated in Doctors Day celebration. They presented a series of captivating cultural performances that were an absolute delight to watch. Their talent and enthusiasm brought immense joy to everyone in attendance.

On the same day (7th July 2024, 10.00am) celebrating silver Jubilee celebration of Puttanna Kulal Prathishtana, Mega Health Checkup Camp was conducted which included Free Blood Test, Bone Density test, BP Checkup and general examination in collaboration with Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch , Canara Orthopedic Society, Mangalore, Family Doctors Association, Mangalore organised at Dr. Kulal Healthcare consultancy Kodakal, Padil,Mangalore. The dignitaries present on the dias are as follows – Dr. Annayya Kulal, Chairman, Puttanna Kulal Prathishtana , Dr. Ranjan R K, President IMA Mangaluru, Dr. Jacinta D Souza, DMO Wenlock District Hospital, Dr. K R Kamath, President Canara Orthopedic Society, Kishore- Ex DHO, Dr. Sadananda Poojary – Urologist Mangalore , Ex Secretary IMA Mangalore, Dr. Rajesh Shetty , Neurologist, Chairman First Neuro Hospital Mangalore, Dr. Yusuf Kumble, Chief Cardiologist, Indiana Hospital Mangalore, Dr. Basheer, Managing Director Janayapriya Hospital Hassan and Mangaluru. Dr. Ranjan R K Inaugurated the Mega Health checkup camp. Dr. Kishore and Dr. Sadanand Poojary were honored recognizing their service in the medical field. The senior members of IMA and Dr. Avin B R Alva Secretary IMA Mangalore were present on the occasion. About 30 Free nutritional food kits were distributed to tuberculosis patients of Padil Adyar Kannuru PHC and Food nutritional and life style management awareness pamphlets and books were distributed free of coast.

The main speaker being Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary, IMA Mangaluru Branch spoke about the symptoms, Treatment and Preventive measures of Dengue.

On 17th July 2024 Free Eye checkup camp, Awareness session and Spectacles distribution Program was held in association with Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch and Prasad Nethralaya Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Mangalore, Onesight Essillor Lukottica Foundation, Bangalore Nethra Jyothi Charitable Trust (R) District Health & Family Welfare Dr. P Dayanand Pai And Sathish Pai Charitable Trust, at Sharada Pooja Samithi, Manasa Mantapa, Urwastore Mangalore. 220 patients were examined and advised further course of treatment.




Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch organised oration of Late Dr. V R Bhat on 25th July 2024, at Dr. A V Rao Conference hall, Attavar road, Mangalore. The topic of the oration was “Challenges in management of Tuberculosis – Learning by experience”. The Guest Speaker of the oration was Dr. Sharath Babu, Senior Pulmonologist, Wenlock District Hospital, Mangalore. Dr. Ranjan R K welcomed the gathering and dignitaries on dais. On 26th July 2024 for the first time Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch participated in KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS – Silver Jubilee celebration and candle light tributes departed warriors at War Memorial, Kadri Hills Mangalore. The Dignitaries present on the occasion are as follows – Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP, DK, Shri. Sudhir Shetty Mayor, DK, Capt. Ganesh Karnic, Former member of legislative council. On this occasion the families who lost their members in the war was honored to salute their unwavering courage and sacrifice. This program was conducted to remember the heroes of Kargil. Dr. Avin B R Alva delivered a poignant talk, paying tribute to the courage and valor of our solders. The speech highlighted the importance of recognizing the contributions of our veterans. The talk was a heartfelt tribute to the Martyrs and veterans of the Kargil War, acknowledging their unwavering dedication and sacrifice. The event was a solemn remind of the sacrifice made by our armed forces and celebration of their indomitable spirit.

On 29th July 2024, Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch organised a TALK AND INTERACTIVE SESSION ON “DIABETES AND ITS MANAGEMENT” to the Central industrial security force (CISF) employees at CISF Barrak, Mangalore. In association with the Indian Medical Association, Mangalore Branch, MEDS conducted a CME on "Mangalore Thyroid Update – 2024" on June 2, 2024. The Chief Guest was Dr. Chakrapani M, Professor of Medicine at KMC Mangalore. The Guests of Honor were Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA Mangalore, and Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore. Dr. Sudeep K, President of MEDS, introduced the Chief Guest and welcomed the attendees, while Dr. Shrikrishna Acharya, Secretary of MEDS, proposed the vote of thanks.

A quiz competition was held before the CME session. In Session 1, Dr. Avivar Awasthi, Consultant Endocrinologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Endocrinology at KMC Manipal, discussed "Unconventional Therapies in Thyroid Diseases: Rational or Illogical?" Dr. Shrinath B Shetty, Consultant Endocrinologist at KMC Mangalore, presented on "Graves’ Eye Disease: A Panoramic View." The session was chaired by Dr. Shripathi Kamath and Dr. Gururaja Rao.

In Session 2, Dr. Manjunath Goroshi, Associate Professor in the Department of Endocrinology at JNMC Belgaum, spoke on "Difficult-to-Treat Thyroid Cases: Simplified Scenarios," and Dr. Akhila Bhandarkar, Consultant Endocrinologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Endocrinology at KSHEMA Mangalore, covered "Pharmacotherapy with Triiodothyronine (T3): Miracle or Myth." Dr. Sowrabha Bhat, Consultant Endocrinologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Endocrinology at YMC Mangalore, addressed "Body Weight and Dysthyroidism: A Conundrum." The session was chaired by Dr. B L Samaga and Dr. Arun S.

The third session, chaired by Dr. Suresh H B and Dr. Devadasa Acharya, featured Dr. Ram Basti Shenoy, Professor and HOD of the Department of Radiology at FMMCH Mangalore, who spoke on "Ultrasonography in Thyroidology: A Gamechanger." Dr. Ashwin M Polnaya, Professor and Chief of the Department of Interventional Radiology and Radiodiagnosis at AJIMSRC Mangalore, presented "Interventional Radiology and Thyroid: Trading Needles for Knives."

The fourth session, chaired by Dr. Radha Mohan and Dr. Malathi M, included Dr. Sujith Rai, Consultant Nuclear Medicine and PET-CT at AJIMSRC Mangalore, discussing "Theranostics in Thyroid Diseases: A Nuclear Revolution," and Dr. Kishan Prasad, Professor in the Department of Pathology at KSHEMA Mangalore, speaking on "Thyroid FNAC: Through a Pathologist’s Lens."

KMC granted 2 CME Credit Points to all registered attendees.




Celebrated under the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” World Environment Day 2024 was organized by the Indian Medical Association in collaboration with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, the District Legal Services Authority, Biocon Foundation, Syngene International Limited, and Vana Charitable Trust on June 3, 2024, at Pachhanadi, Mangalore. The event featured a massive tree plantation drive, inaugurated by Smt. Shobha B G, Honorable Civil Judge and Member Secretary of DLSA – DK. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangaluru Branch, and other IMA members actively participated in the drive.




The Indian Medical Association organized Basic Life Support Training for staff at the District Prison Mangalore and KSISF (Karnataka State Industrial Security Force) staff on June 6, 2024, at the District Prison, Jail Road, Kodialbail, Mangalore. The program was inaugurated by Smt. Shobha B G, Honorable Civil Judge and Member Secretary of DLSA – DK, with Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA Mangalore, and Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangaluru Branch, as Guests of Honor. The program was presided over by Shri. B T Obleshappa, Superintendent of District Prison, Mangalore. Dr. Ranjan R K and Dr. Avin B R Alva trained the District Prison police officials and KSISF staff.




On June 8th and 9th 2024, under the banner of the Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch, IMA Secretary Dr. Avin B R Alva inaugurated a new session of Yakshagana Plays at Ravindra Kalakshethra, Bangalore. A large gathering of the South Canara diaspora witnessed the event, which was a step by the IMA Mangalore Branch to support and encourage the folk-art form of Coastal Karnataka, Yakshagana




“World Clubfoot Day” was organized by the Department of Orthopedics at KMC Mangalore under the aegis of Government Wenlock District Hospital, COS, KOA, Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch, Rotary Club Mangalore City, Cure International India, and RBSK on June 13, 2024, at 9:30 am at District Wenlock Hospital, Mangalore. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA Mangalore. An awareness session on the Ponsetti technique and bracing was conducted. Dr. K R Kamath, President of Canara Orthopedic Society, welcomed the Chief Guest and gathering. The second session of Basic Life Support Training for police officials by the IMA Mangaluru Branch was conducted at District Prison Mangalore on June 13, 2024. On the same day, a General Health Checkup Camp for police officials was held. The program was inaugurated by Dr. Sudhakar T, RMO of Government Wenlock District Hospital. Dr. Ranjan R K and Dr. Avin B R Alva trained the police officials and conducted the health checkup camp.




Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch and Indian Red Cross Society, Dakshina Kannada Organized “WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY – 2024” on 14th June 2024 at IMA Hall, Mangalore. with the theme “20 Years of Celebrating Giving: Thank You, Blood Donors!” A felicitation ceremony for blood donors was held, and a blood donation camp was followed. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA Mangaluru, and presided over by C A Shantharam Shetty, Chairman of the Indian Red Cross Society, DK District. The Chief Guest was Dr. Gayathri N, Youth Red Cross Nodal Officer at Mangalore University. Five members who participated the most in blood donation camps were felicitated by P S Prakash, CEO of Hosadigantha, Dr. Sachidananda Rai, Chairman of Health and First Aid Camp (Red Cross Society), Past President of IMA Mangalore Branch, and Gurudath M Nayak, Chairman of Blood Donation Red Cross Society. Other attendees included Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangaluru Branch, and Chandrashekhar Shetty, Senior Broadcast Engineer at Akashavani, Mangalore. Around 145 members participated in the camp.




A Free Health Checkup Camp in honor of “Father’s Day” was conducted by the Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch in association with Senior Chamber International, Karkala, and White Glove Diagnostics, Mangalore, on June 16, 2024, at Sooryanarayana Temple Hall, Maroli, Mangalore. The camp was inaugurated by Ganesh Shetty, President of Sooryanarayana Temple, and Local Corporator Keshava Maroli. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore, Mrs. Akshatha Sudhir, National Coordinator of Senior Chamber International, Karkala, and Sanmath Hegde, President of Senior Chamber International, Karkala, were on the dais. Dr. Avin B R Alva spoke on non-communicable diseases and their management. Around 70 members participated in the camp.




The Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch, in association with Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail, Mangalore, organized International Yoga Day on June 21, 2024, at 7:30 am at the Conference Hall of Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Mangalore. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA Mangalore, and Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore Branch. A yoga session was conducted by Dr. Anla K Shetty, BAMS, MSc Yoga Therapy, Research Associate at SDM Ayurveda College, Udyavara Udupi. Around 40 members participated in the session. Past Treasurer IMA Mangaluru Branch Dr.Nandakishore, Mrs. Mamatha Balakrishnan, Support services manager, Gracy D Silva, Nursing Superintendent, were present on the dais.


On the same day, IMA WDW (Women’s Doctors Wing) organized International Yoga Day at IMA Hall, Mangalore, at 6:30 pm. The yoga session was conducted by Ms. Lourdu Mary, Yoga Therapist and PhD Scholar at Yenepoya University. Dr. Aruna Yadiyal, Professor and Unit Head in the Department of Psychiatry at Father Muller Medical College gave a talk on schizophrenia.




A Mega Blood Donation Camp was organized by Mangalore International Airport in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch, CISF – ASG, Mangalore International Airport, District Red Cross Society, Dakshina Kannada, and Yenepoya Specialty Hospital Kodialbail Mangalore on June 24, 2024, at Mangalore International Airport. The program was inaugurated by Chief Airport Officer Mr. Mukesh Nankani. Other dignitaries on the dais included Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore, Senior Chief Commandant CISF Mr. Veerendra Mohan Joshi, and Deputy Commandant Mr. Saikhom Muhindro Meitei. On June 29, 2024, the Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch and Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Nitte (Deemed to be University), organized a Free Health Checkup Camp for A.R.M Kia Motors service employees in Mangalore at 8:30 am. The camp was inaugurated by Dr. Jayaparakash Shetty, Vice Dean of K S Hegde Medical Academy. Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA Mangalore, Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore Branch, and Dr. Nanjesh Kumar, HOD of Community Medicine at K S Hegde Medical Academy, were present on the dais. Around 90 members participated in the camp.




The Indian Medical Association Mangalore Branch and Press Club Dakshina Kannada organized a talk on “Stress Management and Lifestyle Modification,” conducted by Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore Branch, on June 29, 2024, at Press Club Mangalore at 11:30 am. Mr. Nataraj, Superintendent of Police Lokayuktha, inaugurated the function. The dignitaries present included Mrs. Devika Purushottam, who conducted a yoga class for press personnel. The Blind Artists Association (Annapoorna Andha Sangeetha Kalavidhara Sangha, Mangalore) was invited to entertain attendees with their karaoke singing. The commendable group of five blind men, who make a living by singing, was facilitated by the Mangalore Press Club and invited guests.





On June 30, 2024, Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangalore Branch, participated in a live TV program on Namma Kudla Channel with chartered accountants. The topic was “Business Tonic: The Role of Doctors and Chartered Accountants in Building a Healthy Nation.” As this was a live program, Dr. Avin Alva responded to questions from the public.

In celebration of World Labor Day, the Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch organized a comprehensive health camp for workers at the Panambur Railway Goods Shed Godown (HMS Union) on May 1, 2024. Approximately 70 members participated in the event. The camp was inaugurated by Mr. Suresh Shetty, State HMS Union President, and Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary of the IMA Mangaluru Branch. HMS Union Secretary Mr. Raghu Shetty welcomed the attendees. Senior Chamber National Coordinator Mrs. Akshatha, Senior Chamber President Mr. Sanmath Hegde, and Senior Chamber Secretary Mrs. Supriya were also present on the dais. The Senior Chamber International, Karkala Branch supported the event by providing refreshments for the workers.




On May 7, 2024, the Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch, in association with the Rotary Club Mangalore City, organized a Hearing Aids Distribution program for the needy residents. The event took place at the Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged in Maroli, Mangalore. The Chief Guest was Rtn. H R Keshava, Governor of Rotary Club District 3181 and the major donor of the event. The program was also attended by Dr. Ranjan R K, President of the IMA Mangaluru Branch, Dr. Jessy Maria Dsouza, President Elect of the IMA Mangaluru Branch, Mr. Prashanth Rai, President of the Rotary Club Mangalore City, and Mr. Ganesh Kodlamogaru, Secretary of the Rotary Club Mangalore City. Sixteen hearing aids were distributed to the needy residents.

The program was held at A V Rao Conference Hall, IMA House, Attavar Road, Mangalore, and was attended by approximately 65 members.




In honor of World Mother’s Day, the Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch, in collaboration with White Glove Diagnostics, Kadri Mangalore, and the Senior Chamber International Karkala branch, organized a Female Health Checkup camp at Prakruthi Mahila Mandali, Shakthinagara, Mangalore, on May 26th, 2024. The camp was inaugurated by Mrs. Vanitha Prasad, Local Corporator of Mangalore. This event, held exclusively for women, offered several free blood tests, consultations, and medications. Approximately 60 women participated in the camp.




A Blood Donation Camp was organized by the Sham Institute in association with the Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch and Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital, Deralakatte, Mangalore. The event took place on May 31, 2024, at the Mangalore Gate Complex, Kankanady. The Chief Guest was Mr. U T Khader Fareed, Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) Mangaluru branch, in collaboration with the Youth Red Cross of K.S. Hegde Medical Academy, Mangaluru, observed World Health Day on April 7th, 2024, by organizing a GERIATRIC HEALTH CAMP at Paschim Re-Hab Charitable Trust (R), Someshwara. Approximately 125 patients were examined and given medical advice for their future care. The camp was inaugurated by Dr. Prabha Adhikari, President of IMA WDW. Dr. Avin B. R. Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangaluru, welcomed the attendees, and Mr. Rohith Sanctus gave the vote of thanks. The event also featured a skit on diabetes, hypertension, and cancer performed by the interns and students of KSHEMA.




On April 10th 2024, the Mangaluru branch of Indian Medical Association convened a Press conference to brief the participation of IMA in the Kambla event.




On April 12th, 2024, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Mangaluru Branch made its first-ever appearance at the TULUNADU TRADITIONAL KAMBALA SPORTS EVENT. Under the leadership of the IMA Mangaluru Secretary, they introduced Munna and Dhooja, buffaloes representing IMA Mangaluru, forming "Team Avin Alva – Indian Medical Association."

The introduction of the buffaloes was graced by Dr. Ranjan R K, President of IMA, and Dr. Avin B R Alva, showcasing their full support for this cherished Tulunadu tradition. The atmosphere at the floodlit "Mulooru – Addoru" jodukere Kambala festival in Mangaluru was electrifying as Munna and Dhooja, expertly guided by jockey Adi Udupi Jithesh, made their debut and impressively reached the quarter-finals on their first attempt.

Recognizing the significant impact of doctors' involvement, the organizers expressed their gratitude and honored the IMA Mangaluru for their invaluable contribution. Amidst the festivities, the IMA ensured everyone's safety by setting up a first aid center and coordinating ambulance services with Yenepoya Specialty Hospital, Kodialbail, Mangaluru.

The event resonated deeply with the rich folklore of Tulunadu, and participating for the first time was a tremendous honor. The IMA Mangaluru embraced the local culture wholeheartedly while exemplifying their dedication to community well-being. Overall, it was a remarkable day filled with tradition, camaraderie, and a strong sense of mutual care. The IMA looks forward to more such unforgettable moments that enrich lives beyond professional endeavors.




On April 23rd, 2024, Indigo Airlines (IXE), in collaboration with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Mangaluru branch and the Red Cross Society, Dakshina Kannada, organized a BLOOD DONATION CAMP in honor of WORLD PILOT’S DAY. The camp was held at Mangalore International Airport from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with around 75 participants donating blood.

Shri Virendra Mohan Joshi, Senior Commandant of CISF, and Shri Saikhom Muhindro Meitei, Deputy Commandant of CISF, inaugurated the camp. Dr. Avin B. R. Alva, Secretary of IMA Mangaluru, delivered a speech on the importance of blood donation. Mr. Bopanna K. P., Airport Manager of Indigo Airlines, delivered vote of thanks.




IMA Mangaluru is dedicated to honoring India's rich heritage of religious diversity by celebrating important festivals such as Ramzan, Mary's Day, and Deepavali. This initiative showcases the inclusive essence of Indian culture, with these celebrations coinciding with CME (Continuing Medical Education) sessions or special talks.

The observance began with the celebration of Ramzan on April 10, 2024. On April 30, 2024, IMA Mangaluru hosted a talk titled “Healthy Finances for Medics: A Doctor's Guide to Wealth Management,” presented by Mrs. Sapna Shenoy, an investment services professional and financial educator. This was followed by a talk on "Ramadhan and Its Health Benefits" by Dr. Mohammed Ismail Hejamadi, Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Health Sciences Advisory Council at Kanachur Institute of Health Sciences. These enlightening talks were part of our agenda to celebrate the philosophy of “VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBAKAM” (meaning “The world is one family”), which embodies unity among all religions and highlights the importance of inclusivity in our society.

Our 2nd executive committee meeting was held on 4th March 2024 at 7.30pm at IMA Office 1st floor, Mangalore. 25 EC members of IMA Mangaluru branch attended the meeting. Various matters regarding IMA activities were discussed and appropriate decisions were taken collectively.


On 7th March 2024 Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch and Association of Medical Consultants Mangalore organized Medico Legal Programme on the Topic “Legal Risk Management for Medical Professionals – An understanding of IPC, COPRA Act, 2019 and KPME Act, 2007” Adv. Vivekanand Paniyala was the Guest speaker of the programme. Secretary of AMC Mangalore Dr. Jayaprakash K P was the Master of Ceremony. Programme started with IMA prayer by Dr. Prashantha B, Treasurer, IMA Mangaluru. AMC President, Dr. Rajesh Ballal welcomed the gathering. Dr. Ranjan R K, President IMA Mangaluru gave a brief introduction to invited speaker. The Guest speaker was felicitated by the office bearers of IMA & AMC Mangalore. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary, IMA Mangaluru proposed the Vote of Thanks. The programme was attended by around 75 members of IMA and AMC Mangaluru.

On the same day Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch held Condolence meeting to mourn the untimely sad demise of our eminent life members Prof. Dr. U V Shenoy, Prof. Dr. Pushpalatha P Dr. Govindraj Dr. Vidhyadhar Shetty . The President read the condolence message. Members narrated about their experience with members.


On 8th March 2024 “Women’s Day” celebration was held at Mangalore International Airport in Association with Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch. The special Guest speakers were Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Mental Health Professional and Counselor and Dr. Jessy Maria D’ Souza, Senior Gynaecologist, Mangalore. the programme was held in the Conference hall of the Mangalore International Airport. Dr. Rameela Shekhar spoke on “Mental Health of the Women and personality development”. Dr. Jessy Maria D’ Souza gave a talk on “Overall Women’s Health”. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary, IMA Mangaluru Branch was also present at the programme. Around 40 female Airport staffs attended the function.


On 10th March 2024 Indian Medical Association participated in monthly cleanliness drive known as “Swachhata Shramadan”. This program was conducted by Ramakrishna Mission swacch Mangaluru abhiyan in association with Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals ltd (MRPL) Lead by Swami Jithakamanandaji- Ramakrishna Ashram. The swacch abhiyan was conducted at the premises of Mangalore Head post office opposite to St. Ann’s School, Rosario church road, Mangaluru (from 7am to 10am). Dr. Ranjan R K , President- IMA Mangaluru inaugurated the swacch bharath abhiyan. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary-IMA Mangaluru initiated the cleanliness drive. Other members of IMA accompanied the office bearers of IMA Mangaluru.


On 11th March 2024 Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch for the 1st time conducted a talk on IMA Membership and its benefits to the fresh interns of K S Hegde Medical academy. The talk was given by IMA Membership drive Chairman – Dr. G K Bhat Sankabithilu. Dr. Avin B R Alva, IMA Secretary welcomed the gathering and proposed vote of thanks.


On 12th March 2024 on invitation to IMA Mangaluru branch, as a representative took part in the interactive session with Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra at Ocean Pearl Mangaluru.

As per the Executive committee meeting held on 04.03.2024, it has been decided the fresh nomination to be called for the EDITOR post and election shall be conducted during monthly meeting. On 13th March 2024 nominations were invited from life members of the Mangaluru branch for the post of editor 2023-24. As we received only 1 nomination before the last date for submitting application by Dr. Devdas Rai, we announced him as the Editor of IMA Mangaluru branch for the year 2023-24 on 27th March 2024.


On 27th March 2024 Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch with IMA WDW Mangaluru celebrated Women’s Day month with felicitation and CME program at Dr. A V Rao conference hall, IMA House, Mangaluru. Program was initiated by IMA prayer by Dr. Prashantha B – Treasurer IMA Mangaluru. Dr. Ranjan R K President IMA welcomed the gathering. This was followed by condolence to Dr. Arun Rao by Dr. Prema D’Cunha. Later the CME guest speakers were introduced by Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza – President Elect IMA Mangaluru.

The CME program was given on “Advanced Diagnostic tests for autoimmune disorders” by Dr. Sevitha Bhat, Associate Professor and Incharge Dept. Of Microbiology, KMC Laboratory services, Kasturba Medical College Hospital, Mangalore. The talk on “Flow cytometer :An Insight into the Diagnostic Medicine” was given by Dr.Vatsala KB Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, Deputy Incharge - Hematology and Clinical Pathology, KMC Laboratory Services, Kasturba Medical College Hospital Mangalore. Dr. Anupama Hegde, Professor, Department of “Biochemistry, Deputy Director Laboratory, KMC Laboratory Services Kasturba Medical College, and Hospital Mangalore spoke on “Biochemical Markers during Pregnancy.”

The Guest Speakers were felicitated by the office bearers of IMA & WDW Mangaluru branch. This was followed by vote of thanks proposed by Dr. Avin B R Alva Secretary, IMA Mangaluru.

“World Cancer day – 2024” Inaugural speech was given by Dr. Ranjan R K, President, IMA Mangaluru Branch. CA Shantharam Shetty, Chairman, Indian Red Cross Society, D K Branch, addressed the gathering regarding World Cancer day. Dr. Amritha Bhandary, Professor Dept. of OBG, A J institute of Medical Sciences Mangaluru, gave a brief talk on World Cancer Day and explained about the programmes schedule to be held on the same day regarding the Awareness on Breast Cancer, Gynecological Cancer, Lung Cancer, Oral Cancer. Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary, IMA Mangaluru and Dr. G K Bhat Sankabithilu, Past President, IMA Mangaluru were present. Shri Sanjay Shetty, Secretary, Indian Red Cross Society, D K Branch, proposed Vote of thanks. Around 280 members attended the function.


This programme was followed by an Awareness talk on Breast cancer by Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza, Obstetrician and Gynecologist. Awareness talk on Gynecological Cancers by Dr. Sangeetha K, Gynecological Oncologist. Dr. Alka Bhat, Pulmonologist, spoke on Awareness on Lung Cancer. Dr. Kavitha, Radiation Oncologist, spoke on Awareness on Oral Cancer. At the end of session, discussions were held on the above topics. Later the audiences were allowed to ask questions regarding the above topics and other health issues.




A request letter to designate a circle as IMA circle near IMA office was given to Mr. Sudheer Shetty, Mayor, Mangalore City Corporation, Mr. Anand C L, Commissioner, Mangalore City Corporation, Mr.Vedavyas Kamath, MLA, Mangalore South, Dr Bharath Shetty, MLA, Mangalore North, on Febraury 5th 2024. Sought appointment with DC and MP and will be approaching them later, Past IMA President Dr.Annayya Kulal Ulhuru was present along with IMA President Dr.Ranjan R K.




Indian Medical Association, Mangaluru Branch, Primary Health Centre, Bajpe, Mangalore and District Disability Rehabilitation Centre (DDRC) in association with MAPS college Mangalore, organized “FREE SPEECH, AUDIO and MEDICAL CAMP” on 17th February 2024 at Mary Help of Christians Church, Adyapady, Mangalore. Dr.Ranjan R K, President, IMA Mangaluru, Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary, IMA Mangaluru inaugurated the camp. Dr. K R Kamath, Past President, IMA Mangaluru Branch, Dr. Prabhakar Neermarga, Principal MAPS evening College, Mangalore, Mr. Nagral, DDRC Incharge Nodule officer, were present on the dais.
Dr. Prabhakar Neermarga, Principal MAPS evening College, Mangalore, welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Shwetha K, Assistant Professor, MAPS College proposed the vote of Thanks.
Services provided during the Camp were Speech and Hearing evaluation & ENT test, EYE Test and Ophthalmology consultation, Orthopedic Consultation, General Medical examination which involved BP and GRBS (Diabetes) test. Around 68 members attended the camp.




The Annual Cricket Tournament - Dr. M V Shetty- Chowdiah Memorial Cricket Tournament 2024 was held on 18th February 2024 at Fr. Muller Homeopathic Medical College ground, Deralakatte, Mangalore. The Inaugural function was held at 9.00am by Rev.Fr.Roshan Crasta, Administrator, Fr.Muller Homeopathic Medical College, Deralakatte, Mangalore. Dr. Ranjith Shetty, Prof. Urologist, KMC Mangalore, Dr.Ranjan R K, President, IMA Mangaluru, Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary, IMA Mangaluru, and Dr. Nandakishore B, Urologist, Fr.Muller Hospital, Mangalore were present on this occasion during the inaugural ceremony. 6 teams participated in the annual Cricket Tournament hosted by IMA Mangaluru. The teams are as follows : Yenepoya XI, KMC XI, KSHEMA XI, Fr. Mullers XI, KGMO XI and IMA XI. Among the 6 teams, the final match was held between KMC XI and Yenepoya XI.
The Yenepoya XI won the Champions Trophy of the Dr. M V Shetty- Chowdiah Memorial Cricket Tournament 2024. KMC XI won the Runner up Trophy.




On the same day (February 18th 2024) Annual IMA Throw ball Match of WDW 2024 was held. 4 teams participated in the event. The teams are as follows: Team Kshema, Team Champyens, Team Fr. Müllers and Team Enigma. The final match was held between Team Kshema & Team Fr. Müllers. Team Kshema won the Champions Trophy of Annual IMA Throw ball Match of WDW 2024 and Team Fr.Mullers won the Runner-up Trophy.




WDW of Indian Medical Association celebrated Rare disease day and Valentine month celebration on 29.02.2024. Which was followed by Potluck dinner, Quiz on Rare disease was conducted by Dr. Shwetha Kamath, Secretary WDW, creating awareness of Rare Diseases.

IMA KSB STATE PRESIDENT Dr. Srinivasa S visited Mangalore IMA Office on January 20th 2024. During his visit he attended Kanachur Medical College, K S Hegde Medical Academy, Yenepoya Medical College, A J Medical College and Father Muller’s Medical College and motivated the faculties to utilise the discounted membership offer available to them. Later he met DHO and DMO of Government Hospital to promote IMA Membership campaign and requested them to support. IMA Membership Drive. IMA State Sub Committee Chairman Dr. G K Bhat, lMA KSB CGP Director Dr.Annayya Kulal, IMA Mangaluru Branch Secretary Dr.Avin B R Alva accompanied IMA State President whole day. Formal function regarding the Membership Drive campaign was held at Kanachur Medical College on the same day.


On the occasion of “National Girl Child Day - 2024” Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch and IMA Women Doctors Wing organized painting and Essay writing competition for high school girl students on 24th January 2024 . Also the painting competition was held for all the girl kids of IMA Mangalore Doctors – Theme being “National Girl Child Day- 2024”.

The monthly CME Programme on “Prevent, Treat, Defeat Sepsis” was held on 25th January 2024 at IMA House, Mangalore in Association with Indian Society of Critical care Medicine. Dr. Sripada G Mehandale, Professor and HOD Dept. of Anesthesiology and Critical care, K S Hegde medical Academy, spoke on Hand Hygiene. Dr. Nishanth Baliga, Assistant Professor, Critical Care Medicine, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore spoke on Surviving Sepsis guidelines. Dr. V K Vineeth, Assistant Professor and Consultant Infectious Diseases, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore spoke on Case based Discussion – Bacterial Sepsis. Dr. Vijay Sundarsingh S, Associate Professor, Critical Care Medicine, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore spoke on Case based discussion - Fungal Sepsis. Dr. Chakrapani M, Professor and Unit Head, Dept. of Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore spoke on Case based Discussion –Viral And Parasitic Infection. Dr. Rouchelle Tellis, Professor and HOD of Microbiology, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore spoke on Diagnostic Challenges in Sepsis. A video was played on Sepsis awareness by the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine. The programme was attended by 95 members of IMA. CME started with IMA prayer by Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza. IMA President Dr. Ranjan R K welcomed the gathering and gave a brief introduction to invited guests and speaker. Dr.Avin B R Alva proposed the Vote of Thanks.


The very next day (26th January 2024) Republic Day function was held at IMA House premises. The Chief Guest was Dr. Venkatraya Prabhu, Past President IMA Mangaluru. The flag was unfurled by IMA President Dr. Ranjan R K. Flag hoisting ceremony was followed by our Chief guest Dr. M Venkatraya Prabhu’s speech on the constitution of India and Republic day.


As per the directions from the IMA Headquarters for the 1st time after the Covid-19 Pandemic “Covid-19 Martyrs Day” was conducted on 30th January 2024 at IMA House Mangaluru. Dr. Sharath Babu, Pulmonologist, Wenlock District Hospital, Mangaluru was the Chief Guest of the function. We requested him to be the Chief Guest since he had actively involved in treating patients during Covid-19 Pandemic. This day was conducted as the IMA sincerely believes that we need to remember acknowledge the sacrifices and salute our beloved healthcare professionals. We had invited few affected families to participate in the function since it would be an emotional gesture to express our gratitude and solidarity with them during this difficult time. Out of the invitees, 3 members from the families (who lost their life due to Covid - 19) attended the function. The family members of Covid -19 Martyrs were honored with shawl and memento symbolizing our eternal appreciation for their loved ones ‘sacrifice. In the evening “Candle Light March” was arranged to remember and Honour the Covid -19 Martyrs.


On 31st January 2024 - Girl Child Day month, Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch and IMA Women Doctors Wing, organized panel discussion on “TEENAGE OR TEEANCHE!” Dr. Prabha Adhikari, President, IMA WDW welcomed the gathering. Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza, President Elect, IMA Mangaluru branch, Dr. Avin B R Alva, Secretary IMA Mangaluru branch were on the dais. Dr.Prameela Shekhar, Mental Health Professional, Manashanthi, Mangalore and Dr.Supriya Hegde Aroor, Prof & HOD Psychiatry, FMMC Mangalore, were the panelists of the function. Lot of discussions took place on Teenage problems and Teenage stress among the audience and the panelists. Dr. Shwetha Kamath, Secretary IMA WDW Mangaluru was the Moderator of the panel discussion. On December 24th 2023, ENT & Health checkup camp was conducted in Little Sisters of poor, Home for aged, at Maroli Mangalore by IMA Mangaluru, WDW Mangalore, & Rotary club Mangalore city with DHO & ENT Staff from Wenlock District Hospital, Mangalore. About 72 people were examined and advised future course of action.Dr. Ranjan r k –President IMA Mangaluru, Dr. Jessy Maria D’Souza- President Elect, and Dr. Avin B R Alva- Secretary IMA Mangaluru were present


On 29th December 2023 CME Programme on “Updates on National Tuberculosis Elimination programme” was organized by IMA Mangaluru. The Chief Guest of the programme was Dr. Thimmaiah H R, District Health officer Dakshina Kannada. The Guest of Honour was Dr. Badarudeen M N, District Tuberclosis Officer. The Speaker of the CME Programme was Dr Jose Jom Thomas, WHO Consultant. The programme was attended by 70 members of IMA. CME started with IMA prayer by Dr. Prashantha B. IMA President Dr. Ranjan R K welcomed the gathering and gave a brief introduction on invited guests and speaker. Dr. Avin B R Alva proposed the vote of thanks.


On the same day Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch held Condolence meeting to mourn the untimely sad demise of our eminent life member and Past President of IMA Dr. K R Shetty, Former Dean Kasturba Medical College, Mangaluru, on Friday 29th December 2023. The President read the condolence message. Members narrated about their experiences with Dr. K R Shetty.


We had significant feather on the cap for Mangaluru branch of IMA when our team “Coastal Tigers” won the second place in the IMA KSB State Level Cricket Tournament held at Bangalore recently. This is a commendable achievementby our Cricket team and has made all of us proud.

IMA Activities

The installation ceremony for the office bearers of IMA Mangaluru Branch took place on November 30, 2023, at 8 pm in the IMA hall. Mr. Anupam Agarwal, Commissioner of Police, Mangalore City, served as the Chief Guest. In his address, he highlighted the noble nature of the medical profession, emphasizing the service-oriented aspect and the special bond between doctors and patients. He commended the dedication of doctors during the COVID pandemic and urged them to meet patient expectations.

Prof. Dr. Mohammed Ismail Hejamadi, Chairman of Kanachur Health Sciences Advisory Council, graced the occasion as the installation officer. He administered the oath to the incoming office bearers. The outgoing office bearers were felicitated, and the yearly report from the previous year was presented by the outgoing team.

Dr. Ranjan R K, the incoming President, delivered the acceptance speech, elaborating on the programs planned for the year 2023-24. Dr. Avin B R Alva, the incoming Secretary, expressed gratitude in the vote of thanks. The meeting was attended by 160 members, creating a momentous occasion for the IMA Mangaluru Branch.

The women wing (WDW, Mangalore) installation ceremony was held on the same day. Dr. Prabha Adhikari took over as president and Dr Shwetha Kamath as secretary for the year 2023-24


The first Executive committee meeting was held at Mangalore club on 16.12.2023. Meeting was called to order by President Dr. Ranjan R K after the quorum was established. About 23 members attended the meeting. Charted Accountant Mr.Sham Bhat was invited and was present. Discussion on various matters done and decisions taken.

MEMBERS ACHEIVEMENTS

• Dr Raghavendra B S received the Global icon award and honorary Doctorate for film making .at Bali , Indonesia

• Dr. Animesh Jain has been elected as one of the Executive Committee members for National IAPSM 2023-24.In addition to being an EC Member of IAPSM Karnataka Chapter 2022-23 currently from November 2022 onwards.

• Dr. B Shantaram Baliga has been awarded the Basti Vaman Shenoy Vishwa Konkani Puraskar

REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATION

74th Republic day function was held at IMA office on 26th Januar 2023. Dr Venugopala D , President unfurled the national flag and addressed the gathering. Dr. Diavakar Rao, President of IMA trust , was the chief guest for the function.

MEDICAL AND BLOOD DONATION CAMP

IMA Mangaluru in association with Wenlock District hospital organised a medical check-up, ophthalmological screening and blood donation camp at Shree Saraswathi Vidyalaya, Kanyana on 19 February 2023 . Dr. Venugopala D, (President IMA, ), Dr. Archith Boloor and Dr. Sowmya participated in the camp. Nearly 200 beneficiaries attended the camp, and more than 50 blood donations were received .

EXECUTICE COMITEE MEETING

The executive comitee meeting was held at 7 pm on 10th Febraury 2023 at IMA hall. Matters regarding monthly programme, membership drive, launch of IMA website , annual criclket and throwball tournaments were discussed. Our charetered accountant discussed regarding the matters related to GST on membership. Hematology CME and State president visit on 12th March 2023 were discussed. 32 members attended the meeting.

MONTHLY CME

Indian Medical Association Mangalore branch conducted a CME on 10th February 2023 at Dr. A V Rao Conference Hall, IMA House, Attavar, Mangalore . Dr Ravi Kumar, Chief of Lab and Vice President , Metropolis Healthcare Ltd spoke on Recent advances in lab medicine. Dr Ashish Sahdev, Medical Advisor-Metropolis Healthcare Ltd spoke on In-vitro Diagnosis of Allergy. Dr Guruprasad Bhat, Consultant Medical Oncologist. Mangalore shared his experiences on trekking and mountaineering with a talk -Mountains- Go wild for a while. IMA president Dr Venugopal D welcomed the gathering and Secretary Dr. Archith Boloor proposed the vote of thanks. The meeting was attended by 110 IMA members.

WDW Activities

Essay writing and painting competitions were organised for school students on the occasion of National Girl child day. Winners were felicitated by WDW members .

A talk on Rendezvous with Natures Angels was delivered by Dr. Poornima Nair on 31st January 2023 at the WDW meeting .

GENDER EQUALITY LECTURE

Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch in association with Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple First Grade College, Kateel organised a lecture on Gender equality on 24.01.2023 Dr. Smitha Bhat, Professor of Medicine , Father Muller medical college was the resource person.

• On December 12th IMA Mangaluru organised an online CME with Stanley Medical College on nutrition in chronic kidney disease. The CME was attended by more than 1000 delegates from all over the country. Karnataka Medical Council awarded one CME credit for the CME.
• IMA Mangaluru started weekly online quiz for its members from first of January 2023.
• IMA Mangaluru (Coastal Tigers) participated in the annual IMA KSB cricket tournament hosted by IMA Shivamogga . Dr. Pradeep Senapati was adjudged as the best batsmen of the tournament.

Indian Medical Association Mangaluru branch in association with Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple First Grade College, Kateel and Government District Wenlock Hospital , Mangalore conducted a blood donation camp on 7th January 2023. Indian Medical Association Mangaluru Branch held Condolence meeting to mourn the untimely sad demise of our eminent life member Dr. Jayaram Shetty K, HOD. Oncology, KSHEMA on Friday 13th 2023. The President read the condolence message. Members narrated about their experiences with Dr. Jayaram Shetty K and paid floral tributes.

The monthly CME of IMA Mangaluru was held on 13.01.2023. at Dr. A V Rao Conference hall Attavar, Mangalore. More than 150 IMA Members were attended the programme. President, Dr. Venugopala D welcomed the gathering. Mr. Rohit S Rao, HAM Radio Enthusiast talk on Emergency Communications, talk on Introduction to Comprehensive cancer care by Dr. M Vijayakumar, Vice Chancellor, Yenepoya deemed to be university, talk on Radiation Therapy in Oncology by Dr. Achuth Nayak, Asst. Prof. Radiation Oncology, talk on Nuclear Medicine in Oncology by Dr. Senthilnathan, Consultant Nuclear Medicine and talk on BMT in Oncology by Dr. Rajesh Krishna, Consultant Haemato Oncologist. Appreciation certificates have given to Mangalore IMA Members Dr. Pradeep Senapathi, Dr. Raghavendra B S , Dr. Suhith G, Dr.Sheethal Savur and Dr. Monawwer Ala. Dr. Archith Boloor delivered the vote of thanks.

The special monthly CME of IMA Mangaluru was held on 17.01.2023. at Dr. A V Rao Conference hall Attavar, Mangalore. More than 100 IMA Members attended the programme. A book of “Mechanical Function of the Atrial Diastole: A New Discovery” By Dr. Dianakar B Rai was released .Shri. N Vinaya Hegde, President, Nitte Education Trust & Chancellor, Nitte (Deemed to be University) was the Chief Guest. Dr. Yenepoya Abdulla Kunhi, Hon, Chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), Dr. M Shantaram Shetty, Pro Chancellor, Nitte University, Dr. Mukund K, Director, Mangalore Heart Scan foundation and Omega Hospital were the Guests of Honor.

IMA – WDW activities

Dr Archana Bhat gave a live talk on JE Vaccination to Ail India radio WDW has organized painting and essay writing competition on the occasion of National Girl Child day for 8-10th Grade students .

MONTHLY CME MEETING

The monthly CME was held on Friday , 09th December 2022 at 7.45 pm at Dr. A V Rao Conference Hall, IMA House , Attavar Road , Mangalore . Dr. Maneesh Rai spoke on ‘ Device therapies for heart failure’ and Dr. Muralidhar Yadiyal B gave a talk on Our planet our health- Sustainable energy solution. The meeting was attended by 120 members . The minutes of the EC meeting were read in front of the members .

INSTALLATION CEREMONY – 11.11.2022

The installation programme of IMA Mangaluru was held on 11th November 2022 at the IMA hall. The chief guest Dr. M Shantaram Shetty, Pro Chancellor NITTE University addressed the gathering and called for a collective effort towards curbing the menace of Mixopathy . The guest of honour Dr. M Venkatraya Prabhu administered the oath for the incoming office bearers. The yearly report was presented by the office bearers of last year. Dr. Venugopala D , president in his acceptance speech elaborated the programmes the the new team is planning for the next year . The outgoing president and secretary were felicitated. The incoming secretary Dr. Archith Boloor delivered the vote of thanks. The meeting was attended by 140 members .
